“Herança do Mar” is a photographic project that explores the enduring relationship between coastal communities and the ocean, focusing on memory, labour, and continuity across generations.
Inspired by Arte Xávega, a traditional Portuguese fishing practice defined by collective effort and resilience, the project reflects on how these rhythms of life continue to shape identities and a sense of belonging.
Through a documentary approach, the work journeys across both physical and emotional landscapes connected to the sea, highlighting working gestures, shared routines, and the quiet persistence of tradition within a contemporary context.
The photographs seek to capture not only the act of fishing itself, but also the atmosphere that surrounds it—the waiting, the fatigue, and the profound connection between people and place.
